DEHYDRATION

What are the signs?

 

Mild dehydration may result in the following:

  • Dryness of mouth

  • Inability to urinate

  • Straining during bowel movements

  • Cramping in the limbs

  • Headache

  • Weakness

  • Sleepiness

  • Irritability

 

More serious dehydration may require hospitalization.

 

What to do?

  • Encourage the person to drink water frequently, particularly when ill.

  • Older adults should consult with their physician to find out what a safe amount of fluid intake is for him/her personally.

  • Sit down immediately if weak or dizzy, to prevent falls.
